Louisville Young Catholics gather for pub night

As cardinals huddled in their papal conclave, a less-formal gathering of lay Catholics was under way on Tuesday evening. At Saints Pizza and Pub in St. Matthews, young Catholic adults chatted over pizza and beer as Louisville Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz went from table to table, greeting the participants as they traded small talk about hometowns and alma maters.

Later, he led the group in the Lord’s Prayer and other devotionals, and he gave a talk about the papal conclave and the Roman Catholic Church’s attempts to reach the disaffected. The group has monthly pub nights as well as devotional gatherings and other public-service and social gatherings. It hosts a variety of speakers, and Kurtz was already scheduled to talk when the papal conclave provided extra interest.

The group Louisville Young Catholics was formed to bridge what has often been a wide gap between young adults — many of them single and looking for those of similar ages and interests — and parishes, which tend to be oriented toward families with children and older members.

“If you go to church, you don’t see a lot of young people there,” said Brandy Mader, who helped coordinate the program on Tuesday.
